Glen Echo Carousel Photography Sessions

so, I dreamt of carousel photography sessions at Glen Echo for years, and now 2024 will be my third year in a row offering these super fun sessions. I'm pretty sure all my friends here know my love of carnivals, fairs and carousels- the colors, the lights, the textures, the sounds! and my love of DC area history and culture. I am offering carousel photography sessions at the famous, beautifully restored 1921 Dentzel carousel at Glen Echo. The next scheduled date is Sunday May 5, 2024, with afternoon and evening slots available.

Glen Echo's carousel is on National Register of Historic Places and one of only 135 functioning antique carousels left in the country. it is known as a menagerie carousel because of the variety of animals including horses, rabbits, ostriches, giraffe, deer, a lion and a tiger.

in the summer of 1960, Howard University students led a protest at the park and were arrested for riding the carousel as a violation of the park's segregation polices which barred African Americans. the case went all the way to the supreme court. the continued protests and active engagement of the DC area community led to the park's desegregation and opening the carousel and park to everyone in the 1961 season.
